As you may know, Gaza faces extreme challenges, and
the outbreak of polio has only intensified these hardships. We do not want to
interfere with politics or side with any party in the ongoing conflict here. We
want to help to cure a disease that kills people, simply because they have no
access to vaccination. No child should die from a preventable disease.
What is Polio? Polio, or poliomyelitis, is a highly infectious disease caused by a virus that primarily affects children under the
age of five. It spreads through contaminated water and food, attacking the
nervous system and, in some cases, causing irreversible paralysis. In severe
instances, polio can even lead to death.
While effective vaccines exist, access to them is
crucial. Without vaccination, the risk of polio continues to spread.
In many parts of the world, polio has been eliminated
for decades, thanks to widespread vaccination programs. However, in Gaza,
limited resources and the ongoing blockade have made it nearly impossible for
children to receive these life-saving vaccines.
The Situation in Gaza
The situation in Gaza is especially dire. Political and logistical restrictions have led to critical
shortages of essential medicines, including vaccines for preventable diseases
like polio. Children who could be protected are left vulnerable. Gaza’s healthcare
infrastructure has been devastated, making routine immunization programs nearly
impossible. Without urgent support, communities remain at risk, and the
resurgence of polio—a disease we have the power to control—becomes increasingly
likely. This is not just a health crisis; it is a humanitarian crisis. The
people of Gaza are not statistics. They are families, children, and neighbors
who deserve the same chance to live free of preventable diseases as anyone els.
